Skip reasons: what to ask shoppers who pass on a product

Updated 2026-11-02 · Would You Swipe It team

Useful skip reasons are short, optional choices tied to a decision the merchant can make. Examples include price, style, size or product type. Offer a clear skip-without-answer option, avoid leading language, and treat each response as a self-reported signal rather than a full explanation of shopper behavior.

Write neutral choices Use a few distinct options that make sense for the catalog. Avoid overlapping answers such as “not right” and “not interested,” which are hard to interpret. Keep a separate free-text option optional and remind shoppers not to include personal details.

Ask at the right moment Do not interrupt every swipe. Offer a reason after a skip only when the shopper can answer quickly, and allow dismissal without penalty. Test the prompt with screen readers and keyboard navigation, and ensure it does not obscure the next product.

Interpret the totals responsibly Reasons reflect people who opted in and chose to respond. They do not represent everyone who saw the product and do not prove causation. Compare them with inventory, prices, page quality and order reports before changing a product.

In Would You Swipe It Merchants configure optional reasons and feedback remains off until enabled. Analytics consent must permit collection. Explore product feedback on Shopify and fashion fit.
