Shopify apps and cookie consent: what merchants should check

Updated 2026-11-02 · Would You Swipe It team

Before installing a Shopify app, check what data it collects, which consent purpose it requires, whether collection stops after consent is denied or withdrawn, and how data is retained and deleted. “No cookies” alone does not describe all tracking: cart attributes, pixels, server events and app records also matter.

Review the data path Read the app's privacy notice and scopes. Identify whether events leave the browser, where they are stored, whether identifiers persist beyond a visit and whether customer contact fields are accessed. Ask the developer about any unclear purpose or retention period.

Test consent behavior Use the store's consent banner or Customer Privacy API to test accepted, rejected, unknown and withdrawn states. Inspect app pixels and storefront requests in a test environment. Confirm that essential store functions still work when analytics consent is not granted.

Check deletion and exports Find out how merchants can export or delete data and what Shopify compliance webhooks are handled. Check whether uninstall removes tokens and app-owned data, and whether backups have a defined retention period.

Would You Swipe It's current approach The app requires analytics consent for feedback and order attribution. A random page ID is placed in a cart only after consent, then carried to the order; it contains no contact data. See the [privacy policy](https://app.wouldyouswipeit.com/privacy) and product feedback guide.
